Health, income security and loneliness – according to Dr. Jeniffer Rouse, Director of the Division of Aging in Trinidad and Tobago, these things are the main concerns of the seniors. As 143,000 old folks live in this nation, that can be the biggest group by 2010, she can’t help but address these concerns for their betterment.

Because of this alarming concerns, Dr. Rouse and her division establish programs designed for the benefits of the old. The Help Desk is a toll-free number that responds to the needs of the elders. This program continuously improves its effectiveness especially that there are seniors who are unaware of this program.

Another program that they establish is to provide income for the seniors where they can utilize their expertise in mentoring and other programs. The better thing about this is that this doesn’t choose a field of profession. As long as the seniors can use their skills in this program, they;d ear a fair amount of income for them.

Housing projects are also established for them. The design of the house and the location are considered in doing this as the seniors’ well-being are being prioritized.

Dr. Rouse has her say about the aim of their programs. “We have to keep a tab on the quality of their lives because they are living together.”

“Stepping up and facing the fear of falling down.” “Doing the right posture for the betterment of health.” “Having fun and doing spontaneous things without worrying too much.” Such ideals are the goals of Matter of Balance. A program designed for senior citizens and this time, their activities and seminars will benefit the old folks of Lewisville.

Candy Wade, a 57-year old senior adviser and trainer of balance manages this program. “We want to help seniors view falls as controllable. In these classes, we will help the seniors set goals for increasing activity,” she stated.

There are physical therapists that will teach the seniors about proper posture and its advantage to them. And also, lectures about facing the fear of falling down.

Exercise. If you read the previous blogs, you would realize that that word has been said for numerous times, stating that it is good for the seniors. It appears like a cliché, hearing the same thing over and over again. And dear, this blog can be related to that, BUT, this shows a different angle of it.

Because exercise is not really about stretching and walking, there are proper ways on how to do the right moves at the right amount of time.

A 30-minute exercise of locomotor movements like walking and jogging are recommended. But it should be lessened for 10 minutes if heart problems start to occur. Push-ups, sit-ups, and other weight-training exercises are also good for seniors, but this should be done only for ten to 15 repetitions. Lastly, stretching activities are good for bones for 10 minutes. There are stretching practices like Yoga and Tai-chi that have been recommended by the experts.

Visiting my aunt for a long time surely brings back old memories. I remember when I was still a kid, and she might be in her middle age, vibrant and beautiful, we used to sew dresses for my dolls. She’s so great in designing clothes that I looked up to her as my mentor. But now, I am in my middle age, ambitious and determined, and she is in her 90’s, but her vibrancy and beauty is still there.

There are tears in her eyes when she looks at me. Maybe she reminisces the old times just like I do the moment I catch a glimpse on her. Amazingly, in her age, she can still remember my name. She knows my siblings well, along with their spouses. Her memory is still sharp, which makes her able to ask us questions about our careers and lives.

Her character breaks the stereotype of the old – forgetful, poor vision, and idle. Though we’re in the hospital for her blood transfusion (she needed this to make her stronger), she doesn’t show a sign of idleness. Imagine, people on her age would find it hard to even put blanket on them, but my aunt is different. She puts pillows at her back and puts shawl around her shoulders. Her vision is still sharp; she doesn’t need eyeglasses just to see us. She can point directly at random objects without making mistakes.

There is one noticeable quality in her that can be seen in other folks, though. She seems to get hallucinations which make her think that she’s in different place. I don’t really know why, but maybe, it’s the effect of her medicine. But no matter what, she is a different aunt I’ll always love.

A surprising $250 billion of senior citizen for federal Medicare and Medicaid is wasted on fraud and scams. This annual loss has put the government on high alert, making them launch programs and seminars aiming to prevent such scams.

This year, federal officials does their mission in Concord, and later in New england, giving brochures and goodies to seniors. But the main goal of the officials is to educate the people regrading this matter.

One of the techniques this scam performs is introducing a telemarketer going door to door, looking for SSS number or e-mail information. When they persuade their victims, they start doing their scams and ask for money. Situations like this needs to be observed like this should be observed carefully, and when things start to get suspicious, it should be reported immediately.

They sit there and watch the day end. They watch and listen to their favorites until they fall asleep. They eat, but they are limited to certain meals to keep them. While it appears to you that their life is no longer as it used to be, you can still do something to make it as fun as yours.

You can cook, dine, and do recreational things together. Or maybe, you can bring them to places that they will enjoy – and it doesn’t have to be luxurious and first class. It can just e around the corner where both of you can have fun and even be much closer.

Enjoying Your Time Together

  1. Amusement parks. You don’t have to go to a spontaneous ride like rollercoaster. You can just roam around and watch the other children enjoy the rides. Watching people have fun can already bring you entertainment, making you feel joyful.

  2. Wander around your town. Doesn’t it feel good to bump into your old pals and have small chats in the street? For sure, you old folks would feel the same, seeing their friends they used to hang out with. Or, just check what’s happening around the town – new boutiques and new establishments, events, and other things that you may find around your town. This can even make them more at home.

  3. Parks. This is a nice place to put your blanket on the grass and have a nice picnic together.

Generation has a way of putting barrier between people. Despite the love that binds your family, it doesn’t feel right when you are with them, because of that gap and the difference that generation has put between you. And as much as you want to take care of your grannies, you can’t seem to put with them – they are just far too different from you.

On the other hand, if you still have that carving to be with them, all you might need to have is a little bit of understanding and other simple things that will make you closer to them…..

Getting along with Older People

  1. Make adjustments. Understand the fact that you and your grannies are living in different generations. Since you have more understanding that they may not be in the position to consider your modern interests, you have to make the step to adjust.

  2. Be patient. There are things that they do which you might find silly, like they suddenly tell you stories of their past or seem to get lost on your current situation. They may even act on their second childhood, which make it sillier for you. But bear in mind that seniors in general get into this stage, and as a younger one, you have to be patient in dealing with such things.

  3. Take care of them. Showing them little sweet gestures can open new doors for a closer relationship. Hug them, bring them food, or just accompany them. These things will never go unappreciated.

Chest being flashed on the screen, fiery kissing scene taking the entire hour of the show, and romantic stories so sweet that it becomes quite unrealistic. Such films bug you not because of its pattern, but also, it bothers you that there are stars who supposedly have a good role, but destroy the quality of their character because of their poor performance. And you wonder why someone like them take such roles when they are untalented in the first place. Beauty? Fame? Young age?

As the words echo from your mind, you, once again, wonder why there aren’t so many people on your mature age are no longer hitting the screen. Maybe because those people are already on their grave….?

Kidding aside, it somewhat hurts not to see actors and actresses showing the best they’ve got. And, if they have a part on a film, they are just going to land a minor role, for sure.

But before you get totally bitter on this matter, let me tell you that some there are old folks that are not a “has been.”

Ian McKellen

Ian McKellen – His magnificent roles as “Gandalf” and “Magneto” have earned him as a very outstanding actor who can play diverse characters without much efforts. He can be a lovable white gown-wearing hero at first then become a magnet-controlling villain after. And he did this during his 60’s.

Patrick Stewart

Patrick Stewart – The character that can only go against Magneto, Patrick Stewart amazingly played the role as “Professor Xavier” in X-Men. His mysterious aura can make you look at him for a moment and wow you as soon as he starts acting. Despite the mystery he projects, he can still show some friendly charisma with his faint smile and expression, making him more befitting with a protagonist role.

Sean Connery

Sean Connery – The very first actor who portrayed the role of the sleek and the cunning agent 007 James Bond. Sean Connery has been in hut action films where he is the lead character. Despite his gray hair and gray beard, he is still hunky and fit enough to be an action star. One of his stunning performance was Entrapment. A police agent pretending to be a notorious thief who deceives his gorgeous leading lady, Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Kelly Bishop

Kelly Bishop – She’s this rich, glamorous, sometimes-annoying-but-has-a-good-heart mother of Lorelai Gilmore. Kelly Bishop is already 63 years old, yet she is still has good posture, grace, and poise that make her land this role. Just looking at her makes you think that getting more mature doesn’t have to be getting more wrinkles and looking all dull and boring.
