I came across an article which I found pretty interesting and hilarious. I had a good laugh about it and I enjoyed reading it. It is basically a list of the things / treatments that a person would get if he or she is in his or her senior years.

This article is very amusing and it brings out the child in every senior who reads it. Here is the list that I was talking about:

  • Kidnappers are not interested in you anymore.
  • In a hostage situation, you will be released first
  • People will be calling at 8 PM and ask, “Did I wake you? Sorry.”
  • No one expects you to run into a burning building and be a hero.
  • People will no longer look at you as a hypochondriac.
  • There’s nothing left to learn the hard way ’cause everyone wants to assist you.
  • Things you buy now won’t wear out.
  • You can eat dinner at 4 p.m.
  • You can live without sex, but not without your eye glasses.
  • You enjoy hearing about other people’s operations.
  • You get into a heated argument about pension plans.
  • You have a party and the neighbors don’t even realize that you are having one.
  • You no longer think of speed limits as a challenge.
  • You quit trying to hold your stomach in, no matter who walks into the room.
  • Your eyes won’t get any worse.
  • Your investment in health insurance is beginning to pay off.
  • Your joints are more accurate in predicting rain than the National Weather Service.
  • Your secrets are safe with your friends, because they can’t remember them either.
  • Your supply of brain cells is finally down to a manageable size.
  • You won’t remember where you saw this.
  • I don’t remember where I published this.

Caregivers are probably the best things that ever happened to seniors. They take good care of them and they are always there whenever seniors need help. But what does it take to be a great caregiver?

1. A caregiver must choose to take charge of his or her life.
2. He must remember to be good to himself. Otherwise, he will not be able to take care of others.
3. Lookout for signs of stress and depression.
4. When people offer help, a good caregiver knows when to accept.
5. A good caregiver educates himself about the illness of his patient.
6. A caregiver must know the difference between caring and doing.
7. A good caregiver trusts his instincts.
8. A caregiver gives inspiration and allows others to dream.
9. He must know how to stand up for his rights. This way, he will be able to stand up for others as well.
10. A caregiver seeks support from other care givers.

When I went home to visit my mother and my aunt last Saturday, they were both pretty much arguing because my aunt lost her coin purse and blames it on the guy who was working their garden. My mom on the other hand keeps on telling her to look for it inside her room because she ahs been inside the whole day. The argument went on for the next 30 minutes or so after I arrived.

I grabbed a can of beer, sat on the sofa and I noticed that I sat on something. Yes, that was her coin purse. The funny thing is, she even admitted that she forgot. Senior years indeed. Memory is one of the major setbacks. I could barely believe this thing happening to my aunt. Why? Because she is a retired History teacher. Ironic right? Yes indeed.

Once in a while, a good memory exercise should be done especially for those in the senior years. Reading and watching television helps a lot.

In the coming of age or in the senior years, people will notice that there are wrinkles sprouting out everywhere across the face. Not to mention the skin taht is slowly becoming dull.

I found a picture in the Internet that tells the story behind every wrinkle in the face of a woman who might be the next president of the United States of America - Hillary Rodham Clinton. Based on what I could see, this is just some random joke created by an anonymous and yet pretty amusing individual.

As we all know, the second most common chronic neurological disorder in senior citizens after Alzheimer’s disease is Parkinson’s. It is a good thing though that aside from doctors, health care providers and caregivers, there are non=profit organizations who contribute to raise awareness as well as funds for seniors who are experiencing the pain of Parkinson’s disease.

The Parkinson’s disease community will be uniting and engaging in a Unity Walk this Saturday in New York Central Park. The main goal of this is to raise funds and awareness for Parkinson’s disease research. This is the 14th annual Unity walk. It is a 2 mile walk that will provide an opportunity to celebrate the American Seniors who fight the condition of the disease every single day.

So If you have nothing to do this Saturday, why not join in and help the Parkinson’s disease community!

The plight for longer life has been succeeding for white men in the United States. Well, at the very least it is going quite well for those who are well off. The age advantage grew for more than 7 years for men and 6 years for women between 1960 and 2000.

A long term study of mortality trends in the US county has been conducted at the Harvard School. They found out that there has always been a view in the US health policy that inequalities are more tolerable as long as everyone’s health is improving.

A majority of the country’s worst downward swings in life is located in the deep south where life is not so easy. Over the past few decades, life expectancy in high-income countries around the world has gradually risen with only a few exceptions.

Based on what I could see here, the happy man lives longer while the stressed man dies early. Living happy means taking care of your health, wealth and basically enjoying life. On the other hand, a stressed man always thinks about problems which literally drains all the life and energy away from him.

When I was teaching at a local High School a couple of months ago, I once asked a student what he thinks about computers. He said, “It is easy to use but hard to teach.” That was a nice notation. I dug deeper. He followed up by saying, “My grandpa hates using it. I taught him how to use it and he nearly busted it.”

That was the sad part. I always thought that technology is there to help everyone and not just people who are there when technology arrived. It is the duty of those who invented it or those who have enough knowledge to share it to everyone especially the senior citizens. The computer has a lot of things that it can do to make the job easier and less complicated. It is good for a senior to have knowledge on how to use it so that they would be able to explore and learn different things.

I searched for websites that offer help to seniors. It is good that there are sites that can help. For starters, try going to: http://www.csuchico.edu/~rsheridan/seniors/computing2.html#RES! they have great resources that would make computing fun and easy.

Hilarious Bloopers on Live TV

A lot of people especially seniors already know the basics on what to do during cases of emergencies. There have been trainings and drills that are done for special cases such as fire, earthquake, health emergencies, robberies and many more. However, let us not take out the huge fact that drills and trainings are far from reality. When the real emergency comes, are we prepared?

Seniors, among all others, are delicate ones. When they get excited and tensed, their bodies react in a violent manner unlike those of the young age. So, as a general rule of thumb, to calm down a senior, tell them that everything will be alright and bring them to a safer place. In most cases, you have to ask them to take deep breaths and think of things that would make them happy and calm. Take their minds off the current situation so that they would be able to be free from the stress.

Remember, seniors’ mindset and bodies are way too different than the younger ones so delicate care is always needed. If you already called the emergency response team such as 911, then assure your senior that everything will be alright.

Do you know the television show Second Chance: America’s Most Talented Senior? I find it as an amazing and an interesting show since it showcases the seniors’ talents all over the United States and they will be able to compete head to head with other seniors.

Most people do not know how talented and intelligent our senior citizens are. All they think about is retirement plans, retirement homes, hospice and those things that stress the seniors the most. It is awful to think about it especially for a senior.

It is a good thing that somebody thought of this kind of television show because by airing the talented seniors, some seniors will be inspired to stand up and show their talents everywhere. They might find something that they love to do and somehow have the courage to jump into it.

The important thing is, we should be able to appreciate our seniors no matter what happens. Somewhere deep inside them is a talent that has to be recognized.
