Programs for elders struggle due to gas price
Filed Under News | Leave a Comment

Is anyone not struggling with today’s gas price? I think nobody isn’t. The officials at the Faulkner County Senior Citizens Center are starting to run out of options and are slowly getting desperate. They help in delivering 300 meals on wheels a day to the seniors in Conway alone and the soaring price of gasoline is not helping at all.
They are now cutting back on the meals on wheels program to just three days a week for the very first time since they have started operating in thirty years. Some of the drivers said that the choice to cut back is not really a choice at all. It’s more on the side of they have no choice at all. They said that they have never seen it go bad and they think that it will get worse.
If the government leaders do not step up and increase the funds for in-home services, then thousands of seniors will be forced in to nursing homes. I think this is a wake up call. The government should answer this call.

Books for seniors
Filed Under News | Leave a Comment

There is always a great feeling that comes from giving. I got across this really heart warming news about an Eagle Scout who spent a good amount of effort for the senior citizens in his community.
Eagle Scount Dilum Aluthga built a bookshelf, collected books and raised money for the senior citizens. He said that it is good to help out the senior citizens and the community since it has given him a lot of things already. He said that what he did is just something to repay the community. He was then awarded by the Senior Citizens for his good deeds. He also built another bookshelf with a collection of books but this one is located in a children’s home.

He added that he would not be one of those old people who would just stay in front of the TV until the end of the day. He knows that he has work to do and that work is to save the lives of others.

Brain injuries
Filed Under Health, News | Leave a Comment

The fear of breaking a bone and a hip is something that elders often carry behind their minds. However, a new government study claims that hitting their head could bring a variety of serious and deadly consequences. Brain injuries actually account for half of all the deaths from falls.
The researchers said that a lot of people often get the notion that a fall is not serious unless they broke a bone or a hip. They no longer worry about their heads. They found out that half of the cases of fall deaths are linked closely to brain injuries. The other deaths were because of heart failure, strokes and chronic conditions that only worsen because of a fall.
As people age, the veins and the arteries become more fragile. They can be easily torn during a sudden blow or a sudden jolt to the head area. This can cause a serious problem such as the deadly brain bleed. The severity of brain injuries is not apparent. Some people may not even lose consciousness and then death will strike in about an hour or 2.
Being careful is a key ingredient in avoiding injuries.

84 year old woman clobbered to death
Filed Under News | Leave a Comment

It happened again. Why is it that criminals always strike on those who are weak? The body of a senior citizen of 84 years old was found in the woods and she was believed to be from Wiltshire. A blunt weapon was used to clobber the woman until she died.
According to the post mortem examination that was conducted, the woman died of multiple head fractures by a blunt instrument which is still yet to be found by investigators.
However, a 45 year old man was arrested and is currently undergoing medical treatment before being questioned.
If you are an elder, if it is not too much, you might as well stay at home. There are many criminals out there who are targeting the elderly and most of the time, they succeed in doing so. It is best if you could be accompanied by someone whenever you are going out on a trip or even if you are just going to buy something in the market. Safety should be on the A-list priorities.

Elderly suicide rate in Japan goes up
Filed Under News | Leave a Comment

With the higher cost of living and the rising health care costs, Japan has found themselves in the brink of a suicide spree as the number of elderly people who committed suicide rose by almost 9% to 12,107 making up about 40% of all the cases in Japan.
They are particularly concerned about money and the rising costs of health care services. The number of suicides went up by 2.9 percent to 33,093 which is the second-highest figure since records started back in 1978.
Japan has the world’s highest suicide rates. This is something that is not to be proud of. Police said that the main causes include depression, illness and debt. Senior citizens are now attempting suicide due to the constant rise in health insurance costs. They are concerned that the state will not be able to support them properly.

Leigh Bradley Youlten was a father of 2 children and was once married. After the divorce, he was diagnosed of having a psychosexual disorder. Psychologists and the people believed that this could be the triggering mechanism of the series of crimes that he did.
After giving out the sentence, the man stared straight and showed no emotions. However, some were not satisfied with the sentence that was given to him. Among these people who are not satisfied is the son of one of his victims. He thinks that the assailant deserves more time in jail and should be punished more.

Telephone scam targets seniors
Filed Under News | Leave a Comment

I have heard of scams that are less predictable but this one is by far a very classic scam that targets mostly the elders and catching them with their hands tied.
There is a leak recently to the Lakeland police detectives that a telephone scam has been lurking around their area and targets the senior citizens. The scam begins when a person calls and poses as an immediate relative who is in deep financial trouble due to gambling debts. He will then request to meet the person at a location where in the money will be brought. He will add some flavor to the scam by saying that certain bad guys will go after him if he is not able to pay them off. Being the loving and passionate people that elders are, they will soon fall prey to this scam.
Later on, they will end up losing money to a scam artist who will then disappear out of the blue.
Let this be a warning to senior citizens. This may be an old and classic con act that scammers pull off but there are factors that can lure you to make them believe that they are your legitimate relatives.

Beach man assaults bedridden senior for money
Filed Under News | Leave a Comment
It is understandable that the economy is going down and that people would want to get money as soon as possible. The thing is, some would rather steal money than earn it fair and square.
A 21-year old guy named Daniel Hixon is now in jail for exploiting a disabled senior citizen and threatening him that he would hurt him if he did not give money. He stole about $100,000 in cash bonds, jewelry, vintage wine and other items from the victim.
Let this be a lesson to those who think that senior citizens are easy targets for crimes. If they can’t defend themselves, then proper authority will be there to hunt you down. Look at what happened to Hixon. If he did not commit such crime, he could’ve been earning money at a decent job.
