When I was teaching at a local High School a couple of months ago, I once asked a student what he thinks about computers. He said, “It is easy to use but hard to teach.” That was a nice notation. I dug deeper. He followed up by saying, “My grandpa hates using it. I taught him how to use it and he nearly busted it.”

That was the sad part. I always thought that technology is there to help everyone and not just people who are there when technology arrived. It is the duty of those who invented it or those who have enough knowledge to share it to everyone especially the senior citizens. The computer has a lot of things that it can do to make the job easier and less complicated. It is good for a senior to have knowledge on how to use it so that they would be able to explore and learn different things.

I searched for websites that offer help to seniors. It is good that there are sites that can help. For starters, try going to: http://www.csuchico.edu/~rsheridan/seniors/computing2.html#RES! they have great resources that would make computing fun and easy.

A couple of hours ago, my wife’s dad called me up to say that there is something wrong with his computer. It started acting up so weird that he literally could not do anything in front of his computer. Everything seems OK but all of a sudden, all of his programs started running at the same time and it made him do nothing.

It was a virus alright. Considering all those games that he had me install in his machine, without a doubt the computer will act berserk if all of them run at the same time. The frozen screen took the smile off his face. He was frustrated alright. Its a good thing that I was just on my way to work and I skipped breakfast so that I could come over to his place. I took a look at his computer and I saw how the virus worked.

As soon as the computer was booted, it does the trick. Nothing you else you can do even if I did all that I could to by-pass it. That is a big problem alright. Especially if you can’t do anything. So I had to clean format his computer and for a change, I gave him a list of the current virus lurking around today. How he got it, I would not know but I installed a firewall and some anti-virus to guard his computer.

Either way, technology still has an issue among seniors. It frustrated my father-in-law easily. Based on what happened today, I learned one thing - be there to console a senior (especially when it comes to technology).

Technology has always been around for us to make things a lot easier and will surely save a lot of time doing things manually. There are a lot of researchers who would like to be funded so that they will be able to develop things from the technology that is already present.

Things such as teapots or coffee makers will spell a bigger difference if, let’s say, they could deliver it right in front of the one needing coffee. We have a lot of skilled developers, programmers and engineers out there who are capable of creating things beyond our imagination.

Eric Dishman, director of Proactive Health Research for Intel Corp., of Hillsboro, Ore., once said that the biggest problem we have today is that of imagination and not a technology problem. If we just give imagination a chance, then we may save billions of dollars on health care bills.

Technology is a big help and advancing it is something that is needed to do especially if it will be able to help people.

In our current digital age, seniors are undoubtedly in a pretty dark spot. More often than not, they would feel isolated and left behind. But that thought will soon come to an end since the SeniorNet, a non- profit organization, created something that will soon rock the senior’s information technology experience. They made computers fairly easy and user friendly. They created an opportunity for seniors to get acquainted with the ever evolving technological advancements.

SeniorNet was aided by Microsoft New Zealand in developing a software in the platform of Microsoft to provide seniors with an opportunity to learn more about communication and Information Technology.

This is such a good thing because it will make the whole computer experience less blurry and more light will be shed on it. This is indeed a great way to help out the seniors.

Technology and electronics can be a real pain in the neck for seniors. When they come to an age as a senior, things look more complex than it used to be especially now that new technology emerge almost every month.

Cellular phones can be a real problem since they are having problems pressing buttons and looking at the buttons itself because of the size. Luckily, Jitterbug has created a great mobile phone for seniors. It has an easy to use interface and the simplicity of the phone itself is very eye-catching. It is bright and has large text specifically designed for seniors who are having problems with their eye-sight. It even has powerful speaker sounds. The phone is packed with live and friendly 24 - hour Jitterbug operators who can make a call for the owner and even provide directory assistance. Affordability is not a problem with this mobile phone either. If you want to have your own, check their website at http://www.jitterbug.com/ and be amazed with the things that they have to offer.

The Internet has a lot of knowledge to offer. For a senior, they may not have a lot of time to walk around different places but they do have the time to bum in front of their computers and go to different websites through the Internet. However, there may come a time that the Internet would go off unexpected.

Troubleshooting an internet connection is simple especially for a senior. The simple step called power cycle is fairly easy to do. First is to power down the Internet modem and the computer. Re-open them after 1 minute and see if the connection comes back up. Its a simple reset that solves most of connection problems. If the problem persists then the next thing to do is to call the Help Desk of the Internet Service Provider to have the connection checked.

Technology can also be easy for a senior. So do the simple power cycle if the connection goes off and try not to complicate things.

The booming industry of the Internet has gained a lot of popularity among seniors. Most campers find themselves online to chat and check e-mails from family members located in another state or even in a different country. They also check for investment options, entertainment articles and even research a little something about their health.

What attracts seniors the most is not particularly the designs but the content itself. They would need something beefy and a good read so as not to find themselves wasting their time staring at an article that makes no sense at all. When it comes to designs, it has to be plain and simple. Texts should be big enough and must be easy to read. On top of that, it has to match the seniors’ taste.

So if you are targeting a senior as your audience then make sure that your content is good, readable and accessible.
