Once you achieve senior status in the world you really have earned the right to sit back, relax and tell everybody else what to do! But, at the same time, it’s important to make sure that you keep fit and active. You might feel like you’re 21 but your body may not! But, if you try to take some regular exercise then you can help avoid the rot setting in!

A lot of seniors don’t really like going to the gym. Gyms aren’t always great places for older people – they tend to be full of young fit bodies whose brains clam up when they see someone over 50. And, let’s face it, it’s not much fun trying to work-out when everyone else in the gym is talking to you like you’re 10 and trying to stop you from doing too much! Saying that, however, some gyms now do run special senior classes which could help you keep fit AND have some fun and make friends.

If the gym isn’t your kind of thing then don’t think you can’t exercise at all. It’s real easy to use your common sense at home and when you’re out and about to get some exercise. Little things can help a lot here. For example, do some leg bends when you’re watching TV, use food cans from your kitchen for some ad hoc weight training, take stairs instead of elevators if you feel up to it and go for a brisk 10 minute walk instead of catching a bus. Just remember not to overdo it – you’re supposed to be enjoying your retirement!
